User's Manual

1. Introduction
════════════
ECMenu is a DOS menuing system designed specifically to be used together with a
speech-synthesizer and a screen reading program, such as HAL (tm).
ECMenu is very easy to use and to configure, so that even novice blind PC users
should be able to master it in little time.
The program has undergone extensive testing by a lot of users, and today it is
used by a large number of Swiss blind PC users.
The main features of ECMenu are:
* Virtually unlimited number of submenus.
You can define as many submenus as you want, the only limitation being the
free memory available for ECMenu's internal menu stack.
* Easy maintenance of menu trees.
By pressing a function key you can add new entries to a menu, edit an
entry, move it to another location within the current menu, or delete it.
The command set is entirely based on function keys, which are easy to
locate on the keyboard.
* No overhead of memory when a program is running.
ECMenu does not allocate precious memory for itself when a program is
running.
Beside the English version, ECMenu is available in Italian, German and French.
Please contact us at the address below for more details on the non-English
versions of ECMenu.
2. Installation
════════════
1) Make the directory \ECMENU on drive C:.
2) Copy ECMENU.EXE to the new directory C:\ECMENU.
3) Copy MENU.BAT to a directory belonging to the PATH.
That is all! Now you are ready to start using ECMenu. Simply enter
MENU
at the DOS prompt, and follow the on-screen instruction to build your main
menu.
Please note that MENU.BAT is required for ECMenu to work correctly.
If you simply launch ECMENU.EXE, the chosen entry will not be executed!
2.1. Sample menus
────────────
In the SAMPLE.ZIP archive you will find an example of how a menu could be
structured. Simply copy all the files with extension "MNU" to the directory
C:\ECMENU, and launch MENU.
3. Usage
═════
When you first run it, ECMenu will guide you through the creation of the main
menu, since at least one menu must be defined.
It is possible to define up to 24 entries per menu.
To navigate a menu you can use the following keys:
- Arrow Up: Moves the menu bar, indicating the current position, to the
previous menu entry.
If you are on the first entry, the menu bar will automatically move to the
last entry.
- Arrow Down: Moves the menu bar to the next menu entry.
If you are on the last entry, the menu bar will automatically move to the
first entry.
- Home: Moves the menu bar to the first entry, no matter where it currently is.
- End: Moves the menu bar to the last entry, no matter where it currently is.
To confirm a choice, press Enter.
To return to the previous menu level, press Escape. If you are at the main
menu, pressing Escape terminates the program.
3.1. Menu maintenance
────────────────
To add, edit, move or delete menu entries you can use the following commands:
A) Function key F2 - Add a new menu entry.
Note: If you want to define an entry that launches a batch file, then it is
important to remember to insert either "CALL" before the batch file name, if
you use DOS 3.30 or later, or "COMMAND /C", if you work with a DOS version
prior to 3.30.
B) Function key F3 - Modify the current menu entry.
Note: By pressing the Enter key in response to a question, the current
content of a field is left unmodified.
C) Function key F4 - Move the current entry to another place in the menu.
D) Function key F5 - Delete the current menu entry.
If you press the function key F1, you get a help screen with a description of
the available commands.
To abort any of the commands simply press Escape.

very friendly and compact screen reader. ScreenVoice can also be used
conveniently with the VoiceCard: a syntheziser on PCMCIA card that makes away
with the cable and connection annoyances especially when using a notebook on
